Brainerd Lakes Fishing Report December 16, 2013
Ice fishing is in full swing here in the Brainerd Lakes Area! I have been out a few times, and the ice seems to be setting up pretty decent.
As I post my early ice reports, remember that the ice thickness is what I have experienced and heard from others, always take it nice and slow on the way out. Check ice frequently and make sure you fish with a friend and safety gear with you!
Most area lakes have had 4-9 inches of solid ice, with a topping of white honey comb on top. Depending on the day, slush has been a small problem. I have been driving my Polaris snowmobile without too many issues. Gull, Round, and North Long all have small shacks on them.
Fishing (for me) has been good, bad, and ugly. Jigging spoons and tip-ups have been the best, and it really helps to drill a bunch of holes and fish many different depths. Yesterday we fished on the ice till dark when it was -6 out. If we didn’t bundle up and hole hop, we would have probably got skunked. The best depths have been 15-35 feet
Please be safe out there, take it slow!
Thanks, Capt. Tim Hanske
