2014 Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener on Gull Lake – Brainerd Lakes Chamber
This May, the 67th Annual Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener will be hosted in the Brainerd Lakes Area by the Brainerd Lakes Chamber with headquarters property Grand View Lodge and in collaboration with the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce.
Explore Minnesota Tourism, the state’s tourism promotion office, organizes this event each year in coordination with a host community.
“The Brainerd Lakes Area has a long tradition as a fishing destination, and now, it’s also well-known for great golfing, scenic bike trails, numerous resorts and more,” said John Edman, director of Explore Minnesota Tourism. “The Governor’s Fishing Opener will put Brainerd Lakes in the spotlight, with all it has to offer travelers.”
The Governor’s Fishing Opener has been a tradition in Minnesota since 1948. The event was designed to promote the development of Minnesota’s recreation industry, and in recent years, it has served as a kick-off celebration for the summer tourism season. Travel and tourism generate $11.9 billion in leisure and hospitality gross sales in Minnesota annually.
The Opener provides the host community with an opportunity to highlight local fishing and other recreational activities, attractions and points of interest. Media from throughout the region attend the event, resulting in an estimated more than $1 million in publicity for the host community and Minnesota.
The Minnesota Fishing Opener is Saturday, May 10, with events planned for guests and participants in the governor’s opener from Thursday, May 8, through Sunday, May 11. The public is invited to a free community picnic on Friday, May 9, in downtown Nisswa.
