‘No Bones About It’ fish fillet contest added to governor’s fishing opener picnic
Gear Daddies ‘Zamboni’ singalong also planned to cheer on Minnesota Wild
BRAINERD LAKES — How fast can you fillet a fish? Have you ever sung loud and proud that you want to drive a Zamboni? “Grand” new events have been added to the free Brainerd Lakes Area Community Picnic this Friday in downtown Nisswa, part of the 2014 Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener festivities.
A “No Bones About It” fish filleting contest will begin at 4:45 p.m. pairing two Brains Brawn and Beauty teams and being judged by Paul Burton of Morey’s Seafood Markets.
When the puck drops Friday in St. Paul in Game 4 of the second round playoffs against the Chicago Blackhawks, the Gear Daddies will take the stage and kick off the concert with the largest “Zamboni” song singalong in the hope of helping to lead the Minnesota Wild on to victory. Goldy Gopher, the University of Minnesota mascot, who will make an appearance at the picnic, even may lend his “Rah” to our collective cheer.
Televisions, provided by Tom’s TV with service by CTC, will be displayed in the community picnic tent so fans can catch the Wild game.
Miss Minnesota Rebecca Yeh, who hails from the Brainerd Lakes Area, will be involved in activities throughout the weekend. She will introduce the first entertainers, the Forestview Seventh Grade Jazz Band, on Friday at the community picnic. Yeh and her brother, Philip, have been invited to fish Saturday with Gov. Mark Dayton.
The community picnic begins at 4 p.m. with the free picnic dinner serving to begin about 4:20 p.m. immediately following the program. More than 65 vendor booths will offer information and family friendly activities throughout downtown Nisswa. Highlights include Grand View Lodge golf simulator, Red Bull Fire Engine DJ Booth with Xbox games, Fishing for Life minnow races, and more.
In addition to the Gear Daddies reunion concert from 8:30-10 p.m. and the Forestview jazz band, the entertainment lineup also includes Whitney Cougar Roggenkamp, Colin Smith, and Seth Doud. Fireworks will follow the entertainment at about 10 p.m.
The community raffle prize – a 2014 Larson Boat package valued at $38,110 – will be on display at the picnic and tickets at $5 each will be available. More information on the raffle is available at www.winthisboat.com. Other event sponsors, such as Cabela’s, Gander Mountain, and Mills Fleet Farm, also will have display booths and offer games with great giveaways.
