In early 1884, the Northern Pacific Railroad was seeking a shorter route west. Trains going west from St. Paul had to go to Brainerd and then west over the line from Duluth. After many surveys and indecision - making the route to Staples was finally accepted. Staples became the roundhouse for the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1889, the small town of Staples Mill (est. 1882) would become Staples, MN. Northern Pacific Railroad was building and hiring, railroad men and construction workers and the men were drawn to Staples.
Due to the influx of workers the small community grew fast. Much planning and foresight was needed to clear land, build a granary, tool house, depot and homes for the new citizens of Staples.
Hard work was a daily thing: but with the same stalwart perseverance that brought them to this new life, they faced their future with heads up. Churches, schools, city government, the people placed their priorities and the growing was fast and interesting.
