Cuyuna State Recreation Area

The Cuyuna State Recreational Area, located near Crosby, became a part of the state park system in 1993 and is quickly becoming a favorite due to the mine pit lakes, birding opportunities, paved bike trails and mountain bike trails. This area has become known as a recreational paradise to outdoor enthusiasts. The area is currently under development and will ultimately provide important access to some unique recreation in northern Minnesota. Currently the activities available include diving, snorkeling, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, off-road trail riding, bird watching, nature viewing, picnicking and sight-seeing.

Mine Pit Lakes

If you like a little drama with your leisure, you'll find it at the Cuyuna Range Mine Pit Lakes. The crystal clear mine pit lakes provide unbelievable fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and scuba diving opportunities on 27 lakes - some up to 500 feet deep. Abandoned by mining companies in 1960, this area of former mining pits and rock deposit stockpiles now boasts regenerated vegetation and water clarity of up to 90 feet that draw a wide range of recreation enthusiasts. Twenty-five miles of natural shoreline can be explored by boat or canoe and anglers can cast a line for trout, northern, bass, crappie or sunfish. The mine pits are also known for the spectacular scuba diving opportunities that they provide.

Cuyuna Lakes Trail

This trail system provides opportunities for biking, in-line skating, running and walking. The Cuyuna Lakes Trail construction for stage one is complete and provides opportunities for individuals to explore the area by bike, in-line skates or by foot. The trail will be expanded in the years to come to provide more opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Other activities under consideration are horseback riding and the construction of a mountain biking course.

Antique Capital of the Lakes Area

While there is much to do outside, enjoy the antique shops in Crosby which has been coined the "Antique Capital of the Lakes Area." Whether you're looking for something specific or just a unique find, you're sure to find it in the Cuyuna Range area.

Years ago, Kay Johnson decided she had accumulated too many antiques and collectibles, she and her husband purchased two buildings on Main Street in the heart of Crosby. Kay's goal was to "make Crosby cute." She got busy and recruited many dealers to form a co-op. Within a few years, other buildings opened up, including two large antique shops which are open all year around. Since then, other shops have also opened their doors.

All of the dealers have become friends and all are enthusiastic about promoting Crosby. In 1998, Minnesota Governor, Arne Carlson, took notice of this effort and proclaimed Crosby as the "Antique Capital of the Lakes Area."
