History of Pequot Lakes

A daughter of Waubanaquot, Chief of the White Earth Tribe, was named O-Pequot and lived north of town on the north end of Sibley Lake. She graciously allowed her dugout home to be used as a school and a church for the early settlers of the town. When she died, she was buried in the town cemetery. Was the name Pequot chosen to honor her? No one knows for sure why Pequot was chosen. However, we do know that the town of Sibley was changed to Pequot in 1902.

History of Jenkins

The settlement of Jenkins began when a supply depot was built on land, which had been granted by the government on August 21, 1883 to Mrs. Isabella Jenkins and husband. Teams and wagons would haul supplies into Jenkins from Brainerd and then "tote" loads would take these supplies to logging camps.
