History of Pine River
Pine River and its community of the same name have a rich history here in northern Minnesota. Originally, the Pine River itself provided Native American tribes access to this fertile region, rich with game and resources. When European settlers began traversing the waters, the community of Pine River sprang up as a natural hub for fur and supply trading. Here the settlers discovered plentiful white and Norway pine forests, ultimately allowing Pine River to emerge as a key center for the logging industry. To this day, logging is extremely important to the local economy. With the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad, the community of Pine River officially took shape. George Barclay, the owner and operator of Barclay’s Trading Post, is credited with officially founding Pine River. The main thoroughfare of the city, Barclay Avenue, is named in his honor.
