Day Trip Itineraries
The Brainerd Lakes Area supports a range of options to joyfully pass the day away. Here are a few suggestions you can consider or use to spark your own ideas. Go explore!
The Joy of Shopping
Take the time to discover the many retail gems in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Find great shops, with one-of-a-kind finds in communities throughout the region, such as Baxter, Brainerd, Pequot Lakes and Crosslake. And if you enjoy antiques, you will love Crosby, the Antique Capital of the Lakes Area.
Looking for Adventure
Are you born to be wild? Then you must consider spending a day on the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Biking Trails. You can choose your level of challenge – from trails ranked as easiest to extremely difficult – in the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area. Maps are available to guide your trip. Rental equipment is available at a variety of Brainerd Lakes Area stores. Rather swim? Consider water skiing, wakeboarding, scuba diving, or any number of lake fun activities. Land lover? Go horseback riding.
Whatever Comes Your Way
Let the day of the week be your guide. Check out the Brainerd Lakes Area tourism calendar to discover your menu of options. For instance, head to downtown Nisswa on Wednesdays for the Turtle Races, a community tradition since the 1960s. On Thursdays, explore Pequot Lakes for Market in the Park, a hybrid of a farmers market, garage sale, craft fair and food fest. And on Fridays, see all that Pine River is quacked up to be with the Duck Races.
Saving for a Rainy Day
Have no fear. Fun can be found in the Brainerd Lakes Area, even under less than ideal weather conditions. Great day trips include exploring our world. Take a step back in time – visit the Crow Wing County Historical Society and Museum in Brainerd, the Northern Minnesota Railroad Heritage Association museum, the Crosslake Historical Society Museum, and the Mille Lacs Indian Museum. Libraries can be found throughout the region with great children’s sections and content of interest to people of all ages. And if you have children who need to work off a little steam, consider one of the many indoor waterparks in the Brainerd region.
Have Car, Will Travel
For a great, leisurely tour of the Brainerd Lakes Area to enjoy the summer vistas or the splash of fall colors consider a Sunday drive, if you will. The Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway never disappoints as a great route with beautiful glimpses of the Whitefish Chain of Lakes. Another great drive is Crow/Cass County Road 77 around the Gull Lake Chain of Lakes.
Fun for All Ages
The Brainerd Lakes Area hosts a variety of attractions, such as the landmark Paul Bunyan Land as well as miniature golf parks, corn mazes, go-cart tracks, and more.
Put it in Park
Plan a picnic. Play catch. Walk the dog. Read a book. Explore the many public parks throughout the Brainerd Lakes Area where you can enjoy an afternoon to meditate alone or build memories with family and friends.
